Good morning folks,
The plastics market is trying to find its new normal after a crazy first half of the year. There seems to be hesitancy across the board for any long-term price commitments due to uncertainty in broader economic forecasts. This update will provide insights into the PE, PP, and PET markets, and links at the end for those who want to dig into the macro levers.
PE
PE markets are the most oversupplied and feeling the most downward pressure. Although DC and Silicon Valley say that the economy is booming from AI, non-residential construction spend excluding data centers just hit its lowest level since 2023. When you have weak construction and agriculture end markets plus excess supply of polyethylene, pricing cannot go up. Spot HDPE/HMWPE railcars have hit the 30s, with LDPE and LLDPE holding slightly higher but still yielding deals that touch the 30s. The regrind and repro markets have collapsed from the 40s just two months ago to the 20s and low 30s. The economics haven't made their way back to all of the scrap streams yet, but these markets will have to fall as well. With Golden Triangle bringing more supply to the market in the coming months, the PE industry needs to develop more end markets or turn off old assets. I expect M&A to occur at high levels in the next year.
PP
The PP market is signaling that prime supply meets or exceeds current demand, with the spread between spot recycled/wide-spec and prime expanding. When the market was tight in Q2, wide-spec, generic, and prime were all trading at roughly the same prices. Regrind and scrap prices increased with more demand, but they didn't match the 100% jump in resin. Producers held resin to maximize pricing during the chaos, but it came back to bite them when inventory built up and prices tanked in Q3 back to pre-conflict levels. With the market normalizing, they have been able to manage inventories better, which has helped prime and generic prime pricing bounce off the bottom.
Good spot resin is now trading in the 40s with some high-impact and specialty grades still seeing the 50s. The spread between prime and wide-spec has grown as blender cars are now trading in the 30s. The good news for the middle of the market is that the healthy spread between compounding feedstock and prime resin provides some structural support to the market overall. PP has the best chance in commodity plastics for a demand boost from the robotics/automotive renaissance we are approaching, so there are reasons to be optimistic for both prime and compounding sales.
PET
If you knew me as a trader, you know PET is my favorite child. It's the most stable of the commodity resins. The US doesn't produce enough to meet its demand, so it is a trading game. Demand is very consistent as PET is used in food packaging, water bottles, clothing, and most consumables that we use constantly. PET resin has dropped from its peak, but only to the 70s. We were seeing mid-upper 70s at the start of Q3, then it compressed to 70 +/- as traders liquidated stock, and now we have seen some recent upward pressure moving pricing back toward mid-upper 70s (all spot sheet-grade prices, prime/specialty grades have 5-15 cpp premium). The root cause of upward pressure is a blend of ocean freight rates and tariffs.
The market is high compared to its 52-week average, so the trading incentive to import high volumes at current freight rates isn't there. It has become hand-to-mouth, which is restricting the amount of spot resin available. This means that companies buying large quantities two months in advance are seeing prices 5-10 cpp lower than those buying when they need it. It is up to the traders to decide whether to keep imports light and maintain a just-in-time premium, or attack the margin and build inventory. The game-theory dilemma is: if they all import supply, that premium goes away and the market could very easily fall 5-10 cpp with bottle season coming to a close.
While resin fluctuates between 70-80, clear regrinds are moving in the 53-65 range depending on quality/IV. Color is trading much lower in the 25-32 range due to its dependency on fiber markets, which are driven downward by Asian fiber supply. Bales are still a challenge to move with nearly all of the independent wash lines now decommissioned. PCR PET pellets are drastically oversupplied with spot sellers struggling to move material. We are approaching packaging season, so there will be a big push by the extrusion and thermoforming sector. I would bet that resin and spot/recycled spreads tighten.
